When I set out to create Circle of Ruin, I knew I needed a toolset that could match the ambition of the world I wanted to build—something capable of bringing ancient mystery, reactive gameplay, and gritty beauty to life. For me, that toolset is Unreal Engine 5.
Unreal 5 has proven to be more than just a game engine. It's a creative powerhouse that empowers indie developers like myself to prototype, test, and polish ideas without hitting the technical walls that smaller teams often face. One of the standout features that makes this possible is Blueprint Scripting—a visual, node-based system that allows for rapid iteration without needing to dive deep into code. Whether I’m refining stealth mechanics, building ritual systems, or creating dynamic responses for enemy behavior, Blueprint lets me test and adjust in real time.
Another major asset (pun intended) is Epic’s Fab Store. It offers a vast library of tools, assets, and content packs—some of which are truly exceptional in both quality and utility. Like any large marketplace, it does require a bit of selective curation—not every asset will be a perfect fit, and some may require tweaking to meet the needs of your project. But when you find the right ones, they can massively accelerate development and elevate your game’s presentation without sacrificing vision or control.
Beyond the engine’s raw capabilities, what really makes Unreal a standout is the support system behind it. Regular updates from Epic keep the engine evolving, while a massive, passionate community offers guidance, tutorials, and creative insights. No matter what challenge you face, chances are someone else has tackled it—and shared their solution online. That sense of shared growth is rare and invaluable.
Whether you're a solo dev like me, just getting into game development, or simply exploring game creation as a creative outlet—I wholeheartedly recommend Unreal Engine. It scales with you. It teaches you. It supports you.
Creating Circle of Ruin has been a massive undertaking, but Unreal Engine makes it feel possible—one blueprint, one asset, and one idea at a time.
